Challenge

My Active Health is a large-scale digital health platform used by members across diverse populations to assess health risks, track progress, complete wellness activities, and engage in personalized pathways. While the platform offered robust functionality, the experience had become fragmented across mobile and web. Navigation patterns were inconsistent, key journeys were difficult to complete intuitively, and accessibility and scalability challenges created friction for both users and internal teams.

As the product continued to evolve, the business needed a more unified, intuitive, and future-ready experience that could better support engagement, personalization, and long-term behavior change, while also aligning with enterprise design system standards and engineering constraints.

My Role

I currently lead and contribute to the My Active Health app and web experience at CVS Health, operating as both a hands-on designer and strategic design leader. I partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Business stakeholders to:

  • Shape end-to-end UX strategy across key member journeys

  • Lead complex experience redesigns across pathways, assessments, progress tracking, and engagement features

  • Translate research insights into scalable UX solutions

  • Prioritize work based on user impact, business goals, and technical feasibility

  • Mentor and guide designers while remaining deeply embedded in execution

I also bring deep design systems expertise from my prior leadership of CVS Health’s Digital Pulse Design System, ensuring My Active Health aligns to enterprise standards for consistency, accessibility, and scalability.

Solution

I led and executed a holistic redesign approach grounded in research, systems thinking, and cross-functional collaboration to unify and modernize the My Active Health experience.

1. Experience & Navigation Strategy
I helped re-architect core navigation and information hierarchy to better reflect how members think about their health, making it easier to:

  • Understand personal progress at a glance

  • Complete assessments and tasks with less friction

  • Discover pathways, goals, and rewards intuitively

This resulted in clearer mental models, reduced cognitive load, and more purposeful engagement across the platform.

2. End-to-End Journey Redesigns
I designed and led improvements across major member flows, including:

  • Health assessments and onboarding

  • Progress tracking and personalized pathways

  • Checklists, activities, and motivation features

  • Rewards, goals, and ongoing engagement loops

Each flow was grounded in validated user needs and optimized for clarity, accessibility, and behavioral motivation.

3. Design Systems & Accessibility Integration
Drawing from my leadership of the Digital Pulse Design System, I ensured My Active Health leveraged:

  • Accessible, reusable UI components

  • Platform-specific UI kits for mobile and web

  • Tokenized color, typography, and spacing systems

  • Consistent interaction and motion patterns

This improved design quality, reduced engineering rework, and accelerated delivery across teams.

4. Research-Driven Decision Making
I advocated for early and continuous validation through:

  • Stakeholder interviews and discovery

  • User testing and usability studies

  • Journey mapping and persona alignment

  • Accessibility reviews and WCAG compliance

This ensured design decisions were evidence-based and focused on real member behavior, not assumptions.

5. Cross-Functional Alignment & Leadership
I facilitated working sessions, design critiques, and product alignment workshops to ensure:

  • Business goals, technical constraints, and user needs remained aligned

  • Teams had shared clarity on priorities and outcomes

  • Designers were empowered to think at both system and journey levels

The Impact

Through this work, My Active Health is evolving into a more:

  • Unified experience across mobile and web

  • Accessible and inclusive platform for all users

  • Scalable design system implementation that supports long-term growth

  • Engaging health experience that better supports motivation, progress, and behavior change

Beyond the product itself, this work has strengthened design maturity across the team, improved cross-functional trust, and created a more sustainable model for delivering enterprise health experiences at scale.

To effectively demonstrate the impact of Pulse, I created a screen-recorded demo of a patient scheduling user experience—first built using Pulse components, and then recreated without them. This side-by-side comparison highlighted the significant benefits of Pulse, including built-in accessibility standards, responsive behavior, and complete component states. Critically, the use of Pulse components enabled the Figma prototype to be completed three times faster than the version built without them—clearly showcasing the time savings and efficiency Pulse brings to the design process. The streamlined experience not only reduced design time but also helped ensure consistency and scalability across experiences.

The video was created in collaboration with engineering for the non-Pulse portion of the demo and featured a voice-over in partnership with executive leadership. We presented the final product to the EVP of CVS Health, and it is now leveraged as a core promotional asset to reinforce the value of Pulse across the organization.
